The most important project in the history of our community...
Not just a new town
When you think of Cwmbran the first image that comes to mind is a new town with no past.

But Cwmbran and the surrounding area has been occupied for over three thousand years!

It has a rich and interesting history that not many people know about. Now is the time to change that.
The Ancient Cwmbran and Cistercians Project has received lottery money to investigate a number of sites in Greenmeadow and Thornhill, most of which have never been properly investigated. And the good news is they want local people to get involved.
So, if you are interested in local history, art, archaeology, farming, photography, making videos, sculpture, local walks, crafts such as weaving and spinning or just want the chance to meet people, this is your chance.
Firstly, visit the website www.ancientcwmbran.co.uk for all the details of what’s going on where and how you can get involved. If you don’t have internet access, contact Richard Davies on 07775788352. He can also be found at Thornhill Community Centre, Leadon Court Thornhill, Cwmbran most Tuesdays between 1pm and 2 pm.
Secondly, choose a project to get involved with.
There are a number of different projects in which people can get take part.
Archaeology group
Those who want to get down and get dirty have the opportunity to take part in archaeological digs and surveying using geophysics.
Art Group
The aim here is to produce a wooden sculpture of St. Terfel similar to the one that was taken to London in the sixteenth century and burnt as well as producing replicas of Silurian art
Medieval Farming Group
An allotment in Thornhill has been aside for people to grow medieval crops including beans, flax, woad and hopefully brew their own beer.
Circular Walks Group
A series of circular walks following the pilgrim route through the area is planned, both for locals and to promote tourism.
Research Group
Various aspects of history are to be researched to fill in the background including the Romans, Dark age, Cistercians right up to Cwmbran Development corporation records.
Communications group
This group hopes to link the work of all the other groups, updating and maintaining the website, running the forums on the website, photographing all aspects of the project, producing a DVD of the work undertaken and collating and publishing the whole project findings.
With any of these groups, new friends are always welcome. You don’t have to do anything other than come along and just watch. No special skills are needed, just a willingness to join in.
